After many nights watching reviews, scouring top 5 lists, and cruising reddit forums I was ready to hit the buy button on the Mind Expander. 166W to be exact paired with the Meteorite Surf bindings. I’m 6’4” @ 250lbs. The board showed up at my doorstep quickly and safely. The board looked great and the finish was exactly what I expected. Jones knows what they are doing, no surprise.
I got things dialed and was able to get out that following weekend for a day on some groomed hardpack via 30deg bluebird day. Coming from 15+ years on a heavily cambered freeride board (167cm) I knew there would some getting used to the new feel. I have to say the first day took some patience on the Mind Expander. The length and stiffness felt great, the base had good glide, and it felt like a great balance of damp/lively. But I just couldn't quite get it to hold an edge like my old board. I chalked it up to relearning the limits and intended ride experience of the board, change in sidecut/camber profile, and the rather hard snow conditions.
Fast forward 2 weeks later, my kids and I took a spring break trip up to the North Shore in MN. I brought the Mind Expander and my old board to give a proper side by side. Day 2 of our trip we had a huge storm come across Lake Superior and dump 13”+. We rode through the storm that day AND rode the following day on fresh tracks for the first half of the day. The Mind Expander completely came to life. The surfy feel on top of fresh snow was SOOOO much more fun than my kinda twitchy old board. Super easy edge to edge turns, excellent float in the deep wet snow, damp and stiff enough to cut through push piles and clumps plus support my weight which exceeds the top end of the spectrum a bit. I’m sold on the surf style ride feel and the Mind Expander. Excited to get it out to some dry powder and off piste riding next season and really get comfortable with the playfulness. Well done Jones team!
